Experience
  • My major area of interest is assessment of psychiatric disorders and related impairments.  I have done over 1200 Independent Medial Examinations involving civil and criminal issues, approximately 50/50 for plaintiffs and defendants.  I was an expert witness at over 1200 Social Security hearings.  I am a contracted examiner for the Maine State Forensic Service.
  • At Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine from 1971 – 2002 I provided direct care for many patients, most with major mental illnesses in outpatient and inpatient settings.  I had administrative and teaching responsibilities in each position.  I am Clinical Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and Director of Forensic Psychiatry at Maine Medical Center.  I am a Distinguished Life Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association.
  • From 1971 to 2007 I had a private psychiatric practice, providing psychotherapy, medication management and evaluations.  I continue to have a private practice primarily specializing in Forensic Psychiatry.
  • I was a part time consultant/employee at Unum, a major disability insurer from 2001-2010.
